Personal development, safeguarding, and the promotion of fundamental British values are integral aspects of our work at Widnes Academy. We place great importance on identifying opportunities within our taught curriculum to address contextual issues, enabling children to learn essential skills for personal safety and development.
Our comprehensive curriculum exposes pupils to the richness of life’s diversity, fostering knowledge, understanding, and skills that markedly influence personal development, behaviour, and welfare. This equips each child with the necessary tools for effective personal safeguarding.
Through our Kapow curriculum, we focus on enhancing children's Personal, Social and Health Education, emotional literacy, and social skills, alongside delivering a thorough framework for Relationships and Health Education, safeguarding, SMSC, British Values, and Internet Safety. We believe these elements prepare students for life, enabling them to navigate their environment and cultivate positive relationships while emphasising emotional resilience and holistic health.
Widnes Academy Personal Development and Safeguarding Overview
Our wider curriculum provides essential opportunities for exploring values, personal rights, responsibilities, and equal opportunities. This framework is vital for cultivating moral concepts that enhance safeguarding and personal development. By integrating these values, we actively promote British values while working to prevent radicalisation and extremism.
The curriculum encourages students to engage with these issues, equipping them with the necessary skills to make informed choices in their lives.

Part of our additional work beyond our core PSHE curriculum is to ensure pupils have further support and guidance about keeping safe both online and offline.
We have carefully considered our school context and challenges that pupils may face as they grow older and from this developed a structured approach that enables pupils to build an understanding of issues they may face and how to address them. To support us with this we use external providers including; Road safety team, The magistrates Team, The Dog's Trust, Young Carers, NSPCC, Crucial Crew, Bikeability and RNLI as examples. Our Y6 children all complete a first aid training award and learn how to respond responsibly in an emergency situation.
